Determine which audio device is set at the Master device. You can check this from the Audio MIDI app. Select the multi-output device and look at the Master Device dropdown. Open the System Preferences and go to the Sound preference. Select the Output tab, and select the device that is used as the Master device in the multi-output audio device.
